About this course

This course will enhance core skills and competencies of health professionals to effectively educate people with diabetes, to promote healthy lifestyles and effective self-management for optimal diabetes control.

Who is this course for?

Registered Nurses and Registered Dietitians, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educators, Physiotherapists, Physician Assistants and all health professionals involved in diabetes prevention, management and care.

  • Discuss the epidemiology of diabetes
  • Describe the physiology of glucose metabolism
  • Discuss the potential factors that increase the risk for getting T1DM, T2DM and gestational diabetes

  • Discuss the pathogenesis of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus

  • Describe the physiological function of insulin and the pattern of normal insulin secretion
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of T1DM, T2DM and fluctuations in insulin release in T2DM

  • Evaluate the initiation and intensification in insulin therapy
  • List the side effects of insulin

  • Recognise the importance of sexual health in diabetes.
  • Discuss the physiopathology of sexual dysfunctions in diabetes.
  • Review the various sexual dysfunctions associated with diabetes and their available treatments.
  • Evaluate the role of healthcare professionals in dealing with sexual health in individuals with diabetes.

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Discuss the incidence and prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Discuss the therapeutic targets in type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Discuss ongoing care and management of diabetes in children.
  • Provide an overview of diabetes in elderly population.
  • Discuss the need for special care in elderly population.
  • Discuss the guidelines for medical care in elderly population.

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Overview on the effect of illness on blood glucose levels in diabetes.
  • Review the components of the sick-day management plan.
  • Discuss the management of infections associated with hypoglycaemia.
  • Describe the management of hyperglycaemia during sick days with an insulin pump.
  • List the steps involved in preparing for sick-day management.
  • Discuss the conditions requiring referral to a specialist.

An IDF ‘Certificate of Achievement’ will be awarded to learners who complete all course modules and pass the final assessment with a score of at least 80%. A ‘Certificate of Participation’ will be awarded to learners who score less than 80% in the final assessment after second attempt.

Certificate

Learners who complete all the course modules and the final assessment will receive an official IDF Certificate and eleven European CME credits.

An IDF ‘Certificate of Achievement’ will be awarded to learners who complete all course modules and pass the final assessment with a score of at least 80%. An IDF ‘Certificate of Participation’ will be awarded to learners who score less than 80% in the final assessment after second attempt.
